TAKE OUT

Cecilia Lueza, A Box of Illusions, 2009
Using the humble take out container as a jumping off point, a wide range of artists were invited to create artwork with few limitations. Throughout history, many artists have played with the concept of boxes and containers including Andy Warhol, Joseph Cornell, Marcel Duchamp and Lucas Samaris to name a few. Some used the simple shape for formal concerns such as surface, form, material, and space while others played with the inherent features of boxes such as storage or as repositories of artifacts or secrets.
This invitational exhibition allowed for artists of all levels to participate. The wide range of responses demonstrates that though everyone started from the same beginning, each journey was unique. This exhibition was conceived by past Museum president Karl H. Hollander in conversation with curator Jackie Borsanyi.
Opens May 9, 2009 at the Brevard Art Museum in Melbourne, Florida
