TAKE OUT

Cecilia Lueza, A Box of Illusions, 2009
Using the humble take out container as a jumping off point, a wide range of artists were invited to create artwork with few limitations. Throughout history, many artists have played with the concept of boxes and containers including Andy Warhol, Joseph Cornell, Marcel Duchamp and Lucas Samaris to name a few. Some used the simple shape for formal concerns such as surface, form, material, and space while others played with the inherent features of boxes such as storage or as repositories of artifacts or secrets.
This invitational exhibition allowed for artists of all levels to participate. The wide range of responses demonstrates that though everyone started from the same beginning, each journey was unique. This exhibition was conceived by past Museum president Karl H. Hollander in conversation with curator Jackie Borsanyi.
Opens May 9, 2009 at the Brevard Art Museum in Melbourne, Florida

New Project: WINDS OF CHANGE

It may be no wonder, that the rainbow—bright, elusive, and heavenly—plays a magical, otherworldly part in most ancient and modern belief systems around the world. Again we see the myriad of human belief concerning the rainbow. The complex diversity of rainbow myth is far-reaching; its inherent similarities are also. Whether as a bridge to the heavens, a messenger to the gods, divine archer’s bow, or mystic intangible entity, the rainbow persists as a multifaceted lesson. Because while any particular idea (i.e. the rainbow) can be perceived in one way to one person – someone else can picture that idea in a very different way. And while we may not be able to fully explain the workings of the world or the purpose of life—we cannot avoid exposing our deepest hopes and fears in the search for truth.

Re:AGE Group Show at NOVA 535

Youth is fleeting, especially as a creative individual. The bravado, energy and enthusiasm with which one grows into and cultivates their art is necessarily sacrificed for the maturity and wisdom of age as one's career develops. For this show, we ask a handpicked group of young artists to reflect upon their creative progress to date, and using this moment of self-reflection, to envision the artist they will be 50 years in the future. The exhibition will open in two installments, divided between the male and female participating artists. While the overall concept for each installment is the same, we approach the separate groups with slightly different leading themes, asking different questions to guide the respective creative responses. The show includes works by Heather Dykstra, Jean Saavedra, Victoria Topor, Cecilia Lueza, Kevin Margitch, Erik Jones, Ryan Prado and Daniel Williams among others.
